He Cheated. I Rose.
Their goal had been to unsettle Chloe, to make her back away. They never imagined it might actually bring the two closer. Besides, hadn't they failed? How could they claim their relationship was already solid? They wondered if their son was simply lovesick. The girl had a child and was divorced, yet he was completely smitten. They just couldn't wrap their heads around it. "Grandpa, Grandma, thank you for the big toys for me. I give you a kiss!" A little voice chirped. Hearing it, Rhea and Hogan stiffened. Only then did they properly notice the little boy beside Chloe. He was round-cheeked and utterly adorable. The child was beaming at them. Being called "Grandpa" and "Grandma" made something in their chests soften immediately. Rhea stared at the boy's smiling face, momentarily stunned. Hogan had been struggling to maintain his stern expression, but at the sound of the boy's voice, he murmured softly, "Well now... he knows to call me Grandpa. Not bad." "Grandpa, you're so handsome. Grandma, you're so pretty," Robert said, tilting his head with an air of innocent wisdom. "You're good if you don't hurt Mommy. If you hurt her, I won't allow it! I'm little, but I get mad easily! Bad guys bully Mommy, and I fight bad guys—I'll keep Mommy safe, always!" Hearing this, Hogan felt a strange pang. Look at that—this little one knew to protect his mother at such a tender age. Not bad at all. The boy was being raised right. A good kid. That "Grandpa" had really gone straight to his heart. "Alright then, come here and let Grandpa have a proper look," Hogan said, squatting down and opening his arms. Without a moment's hesitation, Robert ran straight into them. "Grandpa, you're not the kind of people who bully Mommy, are you? You're Eugene's parents, right?" Robert asked, tilting his head again. Hogan immediately put on his most earnest face. "How could we ever bully your mommy? You saw—we're giving her spending money!" "Grandpa is the best! Grandpa, a kiss—mwah!" Robert declared, planting a firm kiss on Hogan's cheek.Suddenly, Hogan was so delighted he seemed to forget he was supposed to be the stern patriarch. His heart felt thoroughly melted. Seizing the moment, Robert gazed up at Hogan with wide, earnest eyes. "Grandpa... do I get spending money too?" Hogan was briefly speechless and instinctively glanced at Rhea. Rhea, snapping back to reality, turned, opened a nearby cabinet, took out her handbag, and retrieved a sleek pink credit card from it. "Sweetheart, just for that address, I have to show some love," Rhea said, handing the card to Robert. "This is a supplementary card on my account. The limit is quite generous. Use it for anything reasonable—within reason, of course." "Wow, Grandma is the best! Grandma, a kiss!" Robert immediately released Hogan and leaped into Rhea's arms, standing on his toes to kiss her cheek. Hogan looked at his now-empty arms, feeling a twinge of discontent. Why didn't his new grandson let him hold him a little longer? Robert, however, wasn't being greedy. Clutching the pink card, he returned to Chloe's side. "Mommy, now I have grandparents who love me too! Isn't that great?" Chloe fought back a smile. This little schemer was at it again. She lifted Robert up, faced Rhea and Hogan, and gave a slight, polite nod. "My apologies. He's young and doesn't know any better. Thank you for your generosity. Since we've been introduced, I should be going now." "Oh, wait—" Rhea started, wanting to stop Chloe but unsure what to say. Hogan stood there, shooting a glare at Eugene. He really wanted to scold his oblivious son for not speaking up. Eugene didn't say much. He simply stated, "I'll go with you. I drove." "Alright," Chloe replied simply, and led Robert out first. Eugene remained for a moment, looked at his parents, shrugged, and said, "If she gets upset with me because of this, you'll both have me to answer to." "We didn't do anything to her! Look, we even gave her such a substantial... welcome gift," Rhea tried to explain. Her carefully plotted test had been seen through effortlessly. She, who was usually so confident, felt thoroughly embarrassed. That girl Chloe was truly something. She had seen through Rhea's disguise instantly. And from what Rhea could recall, she seemed remarkably capable in a crisis.
