He Cheated. I Rose.
Vincent was ten years her senior, yet possessed a striking, ageless handsomeness that defied his years. Initially, Vincent had treated her with a mentor's distance. She viewed him as a superior and afforded him deep respect. However, everything shifted after her eighteenth birthday. That near-obsessive fixation, which Vincent termed "devotion", began to feel suffocating. Chloe felt a profound sense of helplessness. She never anticipated that Shade had fallen for Vincent, while Vincent's focus remained relentlessly on her. The consequence was Shade's burning desire to see her dead. After a particular mission concluded, Vincent sent her flowers, as was his custom. When she discarded them once again, Shade intercepted her, brandishing a knife. In Shade's eyes, Vincent's attention was the highest honor—one that Chloe carelessly rejected. She wanted to leave Silverash, to become the first to walk away. Both she and Shade were Vincent's creations, matched nearly equally in skill. To escape the organization's pursuit, she had no choice but to fight Shade. The battle was brutal. She emerged victorious, but not without nearly paying the ultimate price. She spared Shade's life. When other operatives arrived, they took Shade away. With Charles' assistance, Chloe successfully vanished, emerging with a pristine new identity. Chloe Lewis. Clo. Who would ever connect the two? No one. Even Charles, the sole person aware she had a hidden past, didn't know the master's identity or the true nature of the organization. She had never intended to involve them. Why would she? One month remained. In that time, she needed to resolve everything. The situation with the Myers family was particularly complex. Madilyn had cultivated her own power base within the family. Openly forcing them out wouldn't be straightforward. If only Arthur possessed a stronger will, matters wouldn't be so difficult. He was hopelessly naive in matters of the heart, yet reasonably competent in managing the corporation. "Arthur still needs to mature. He may yet become a capable steward," Chloe remarked calmly."That boy is a fool. Let's not speak of him." Charles waved a dismissive hand. Then his expression grew solemn. "Dear, I intend to transfer all my personal shares in Myers Group to you." "To me?" Chloe couldn't conceal her surprise. "That... doesn't seem appropriate." "It is entirely appropriate. The Myers family, under Arthur's potential leadership, is on a concerning path. I would rather see the legacy entrusted to capable hands than watch it be dismantled by opportunists," Charles stated firmly. "Don't think I'm unaware. Madilyn has illegitimate children on the side—more than one. Those vultures have been circling the family assets for years." Chloe's gaze darkened. She had known this for some time but had kept it from Charles, not wishing to burden him or affect his health. It seemed he had known all along. "Arthur lacks discernment. If he assumes control, he will be the ruin of this family," Charles said with palpable frustration. "Rather than have them tear the company apart in a squabble, I would see it given to you." Chloe remained silent. "You have vision and strength. I wish to entrust the future of Myers Group to you. At the very least, you could ensure Arthur doesn't run it into the ground and that the family name retains some dignity. Otherwise, we risk becoming the talk of Capaville for all the wrong reasons." Chloe strongly considered telling Charles she would be leaving the city in a month. But voicing that now would only distress him. "I will keep a close watch on Myers Group affairs." She thought to herself. As long as she was present, anyone attempting to undermine the company would have to answer to her. Charles needn't worry. While Charles lived, she wouldn't allow Arthur to be the family's downfall. Madilyn had, thus far, remained cautious. She still seemed to harbor some genuine concern for Arthur's standing. Or the moment, anyway, Madilyn's playing the part of the obedient player. As for Jennifer, her ambitions were transparent—she wanted Arthur to herself. She was unlikely to overreach. Chloe and Robert stayed for dinner with Charles before taking their leave. During the drive home, Chloe reflected on the final question Charles had posed. "Dear, are you fond of that man, Eugene?"She hadn't expected the inquiry. At the Lewis Group gala, Eugene's protective behavior had been unmistakable—clear to anyone watching. That Charles had noticed and asked so directly was what truly gave her pause.
