He Cheated. I Rose.
When Chloe heard the news of Monique's mental collapse, her expression remained impassive. Whether Monique lived or died no longer mattered to her. All she had wanted was to restore order to Lewis Group, and now, that was accomplished. Just then, she felt something pressed into her palm. Looking down, she saw a beautifully wrapped piece of candy. A piece of candy? Chloe frowned slightly and looked up at the person responsible. Eugene had placed it there. What was this? Was he treating her like a child, trying to comfort her? "If it stings, have some candy," Eugene said with a gentle smile. "I've asked the staff to prepare the guest rooms. You can all stay here tonight." Chloe looked at the candy in her hand and couldn't help a soft smile. "You don't have to keep staying at the hotel with Robert. If you don't wish to return to Lewis Manor, you're welcome to stay here," Eugene continued as he stood up. He delivered this line simply, then went to instruct the housekeepers to finalize the guest rooms. The moment Eugene was out of sight, Robert and Oralia, who had been sitting quietly, immediately sprang up and rushed over like excited children. "Ooh, I smell romance in the air! How come I didn't get any candy? Am I not pretty enough?" Oralia pouted, pretending to grumble. "Your taste is yucky—you should just find a pretty boy! That guy's way too cool for you!" Robert retorted bluntly. "Kid, I've always been good to you! How can you be so mean?" Oralia protested, then grinned widely. "My future man will come for me on a white horse, just you wait!" "Daydreamin' again? You gonna get bopped by real life, y'know?" Robert said all calm-like. "C'mon, be more real, okay?" Oralia stuck out her tongue and clung to Chloe's arm. "Chloe, be the judge! Robert is bullying me!" Chloe was speechless. "I might not be able to handle a man like Eugene, but I can sure appreciate him." Oralia leaned in and whispered conspiratorially. "Chloe, he's the real deal. When Monique charged at you, my legs turned to jelly. He handled it so effortlessly. Tell me honestly, is he your future husband material?""Future husband?" Chloe raised an eyebrow. "Nothing's settled yet, and you're already giving him titles? Aren't you getting ahead of yourself?" "When I found out you'd married that jerk Arthur back then, I was so upset I thought I'd get an ulcer. But with this guy... I feel like all my stress just melted away. That's not a fake feeling." Oralia lowered her voice further. "At the very least, in terms of looks and presence, Eugene is ten times the man Arthur is!" "Pfft!" Chloe couldn't hold back a light laugh. "Chloe, I'm serious. Don't forget what I do for a living. I've met all sorts. Eugene is a good man. Prime husband material," Oralia stated earnestly, giving a thumbs-up. "I'm truly honored to receive such high praise from Ms. Larson." A male voice suddenly interjected from behind. Oralia froze, then turned around awkwardly. There stood Eugene, looking at them. Oops! Oralia looked up at the ceiling, her face flushing with embarrassment. Way to get caught talking about someone! "However, I believe I still need to prove myself, as I'm not quite there yet," Eugene said, his gaze shifting to Chloe with a gentle smile. "I haven't quite won a certain someone's heart." A beat of awkward silence hung between Chloe, Robert, and Oralia, none of them daring to break it. "The rooms are ready. You may choose any of the guest suites upstairs. I've also had some fresh clothes and toiletries arranged for you; they'll be brought up shortly." "Wow, awesome job, Eug— I mean, Mr. Rosewood!" Oralia exclaimed excitedly, then quickly corrected herself with an awkward giggle. "Ahem! I mean, how very thoughtful of you, Mr. Rosewood!" Robert shot her a look that said "you're hopeless" and sighed helplessly. "Thank you," Robert said politely as he walked forward. Passing Eugene, he added in a cool, mature tone, "Appreciate it." Then, shoving his hands in his pockets, he headed straight for the stairs. "I call dibs on picking first!" he announced before breaking into a run upstairs. Hearing this, Oralia flared up. "Hey, you little rascal! Wait for me! Don't you dare leave me behind!" She took off after him. Chloe watched the chaotic pair—one tall, one small—and smiled helplessly. "They're always like this. A bit too energetic.""It's perfectly fine. They're welcome to stay as long as they like, if it makes them happy," Eugene said, his eyes on Chloe as he took a step closer. Chloe watched the man approach and cleared her throat softly. Eugene, however, seemed unbothered. He closed the distance until he was standing very close to her. Chloe looked up at the man now before her and couldn't help frowning slightly. What is he doing, getting this close?
