He Cheated. I Rose.
"Wow, that was fun! Can we do it again?" A child's cheerful voice cut through the tension. Everyone turned. Across the street stood the young woman, holding the little girl safely in her arms. "Nina!" An old man rushed over, his steps unsteady. The scene had terrified him. Only now, hearing the girl's voice, did he finally calm down. "Grandpa, that was amazing! It felt like flying!" the little girl chattered excitedly, still clinging to Chloe. "Miss, can we do that again?" Chloe stayed silent. "Nina, you scared me half to death. If your grandma heard about this, she'd never forgive me." The old man looked at Chloe, his eyes full of gratitude. "Miss, thank you... thank you so much." His hands trembled as he gently took the girl from her arms. "Pretty lady, I want to play again!" The girl reluctantly let go of Chloe's hand. Chloe glanced at her, then at the smashed cake nearby. She shrugged. "Too bad. I was going to give you that cake." "Go buy the child another cake," a deep voice said. Chloe turned. A tall man stood nearby. He was so tall she had to look up. He seemed familiar, like she'd seen him somewhere before. When Chloe grabbed the girl earlier, this man had moved too. He'd tried to help, to save them both, but Chloe was faster. He never got the chance. She moved so quickly, no one else even noticed—maybe no one ever would. Chloe smiled at him. "Thank you for trying to help, sir." Eugene smiled back. "I overestimated the situation. I didn't really do anything." He paused, studying her. "You've got some serious skills, miss." Chloe's gaze sharpened. So he had noticed. "That truck was headed straight for us. I had to book it, you know? I like being alive and all." She chuckled. "When your life's on the line, you find that extra push. You moved pretty quick yourself, didn't you?" No one else had been close, but this man appeared in a flash. He wasn't ordinary. Eugene gave a faint smile. They looked at each other, neither saying more. "Mr. Rosewood, I have the cake." Bruce walked over with a small cake box and handed it respectfully to the old man. The old man looked surprised. "This is..." "It's for the girl," Bruce said kindly. The old man's eyes grew wet. The little girl beamed. "Strawberry cake!""Be more careful next time, alright?" Bruce smiled as he passed the cake over. Sirens sounded in the distance. Chloe decided it was time to go. "Miss, your hand is hurt." The man's deep voice came from behind. Chloe glanced down. She'd scraped her arm while dodging the truck. A little blood had seeped through her sleeve. She'd been so focused on the girl that she hadn't even noticed. "It's nothing," she said lightly. A scratch like this was no big deal. "I have a first aid kit in my car. Let me help you do a quick fix on the wound." Eugene pointed to a black car parked nearby. "I'm fine, really—" Chloe began, then paused. If she went home like this, Robert would definitely make a fuss. Since the kit was here, she might as well clean the blood off her sleeve. "Alright. Thanks," she agreed. They walked to the car together. Bruce brought the first aid kit and handed it to Eugene. "I can do it myself," Chloe said quickly when she saw Eugene wanted to help. Eugene raised a brow. "Can you reach that spot easily?" Before she could answer, he opened the kit and took out disinfectant and gauze. "This might sting a little. I'll be quick." Chloe almost laughed at his gentle tone. This scratch was nothing compared to what she'd been through before. She wouldn't even flinch at this. "Ow!" A sharp pain stung her arm. Chloe frowned—he hadn't even let her prepare before applying the disinfectant.
