He Cheated. I Rose.
Everyone in the room was stunned. They couldn't believe Chloe still had the nerve to talk like that, especially now. After a beat of heavy quiet, Ernesto leaned forward, his casual demeanor fading into a serious, solemn look as he spoke up, his voice carrying weight across the room. "Since Ms. Lewis is so determined—and she's shown she means it—we old-timers shouldn't stand in a young person's way." He glanced around. "If she's got what it takes, she deserves a shot. Don't you all think so?" He turned toward Scott. "Mr. Lewis, what do you say?" Then his eyes swept across the room. "Fellow shareholders... what's your opinion?" The room fell silent. Ernesto had made his position perfectly clear. Sean glanced sideways at Chloe, his lips curling with disdain. The terms Chloe proposed went far beyond what anyone expected. If public opinion spiraled out of control, she would be the one to lose everything—not just her position, but all her ties to the Lewis family. Rumor had it she had fallen out with Scott and wanted to stand on her own. But in a situation like this, she should have stepped back and stayed quiet. Even if things went wrong, she could have lowered her head and asked her father for help. He wouldn't have refused his own daughter. But saying something like that in front of everyone at the board meeting? Not the right move. She had burned her bridges. "Fine!" Scott's voice boomed, edged with anger. Ernesto looked at Scott, smiled slightly, and added, "Since Mr. Lewis has spoken so clearly, it would be rude for us to object. "Alright! You all heard it. We're giving Chloe 48 hours. She handles the online mess herself. If public opinion turns in her favor within two days, Lewis Group will officially appoint her as vice president, and she'll help manage the company. No objections allowed." "I'll be a witness," Monique chimed in, raising her hand to show she meant it. "As long as Chloe can turn this around, no one gets to question her again." "Good." "Agreed." The shareholders echoed their approval one after another. "Chloe, don't say I didn't warn you," Sean said, sounding kind on the surface. "You still don't know what you're up against. If you regret this later, no one will feel sorry for you." "Thanks for the reminder. That's exactly why I have to push forward, right?" Chloe smiled calmly, her stunning smile answering every doubt in the room. "To make sure no one goes back on their word, I've recorded all the terms we just discussed," Zachary spoke up like a well-behaved assistant, pulling a chair over and sitting behind Chloe. As Chloe's temporary assistant, he was allowed to attend high-level meetings with her. Though his words seemed aimed at Chloe, they were really meant for the senior executives and shareholders in the room: now that the agreement was out in the open, if anyone tried to back out, it wouldn't just be one person losing face—it would be all of them. For executives of their caliber, breaking promises was completely forbidden—once it got out, it was humiliating. Some felt a flicker of guilt. What if Chloe actually succeeded? Would they have to accept this young woman as their leader? Where would their pride be? But the thought quickly passed. Chloe was all talk. A girl with no real business experience, who'd just inherited stocks from her late mother—now she was getting arrogant. Could she even handle that thirty percent stake?Well, since she'd said it herself, they'd just wait and see what tricks she had to turn around a raging storm of public opinion. When the meeting ended, people filed out. As Chloe and Zachary were about to leave, Scott stopped them. Hearing Scott speak, Monique, who had been ready to leave, sat back down. She wanted to hear what Scott would say to Chloe. Chloe didn't sit back down. She stood there, looked at Scott, and asked calmly, "Was there something else, Mr. Lewis?" Calling him "Mr. Lewis" in front of others was one thing, but now it was just the two of them, father and daughter, and she still used that title. Scott's face tightened. He shot Monique a look. "Monique, step out for a moment. I need to speak with Chloe alone." "Is there anything I can't hear?" Monique retorted coldly. Scott's expression darkened. He'd made it clear he wanted everyone to leave—just him and Chloe. That included Zachary, who had been sticking close to Chloe's side.
