The Cherished Pet of Nine Beast Husbands

Chapter 344 Changing Tides

Melinda's eyes filled with disdain at the mention of Arthur. Especially after hearing from Zachary what Arthur had done, she wished she could personally grind him into dust. But when Eugene appeared on the scene, Melinda immediately felt he and Chloe were a perfect match. Arthur had never been in Melinda's good graces. In her view, if she were a man, she would have done everything to protect Chloe—even if it meant putting her life on the line. Arthur had found a treasure in Chloe but failed to cherish her. He neglected her, and what was worse, he still carried a torch for his so-called "true love", Jennifer, wanting to have his cake and eat it too. He really needed to take a good, hard look in the mirror. She prayed she'd never have to set eyes on Arthur again. If she did, though, she'd teach him a lesson he'd never forget—show him just how hard a woman's fist could land. She'd been wanting to punch that guy for ages. "Chloe, I was thinking—when you get married, can I be your bridesmaid?" Melinda leaned in eagerly, then quickly corrected herself. "No, wait—I'll be a groomsman. I'm so dashing it'd be a waste to be a bridesmaid. I want to stand behind you and have your back."Chloe couldn't help but frown at Melinda's words. This was getting more and more absurd. Get married? Would a day like that ever come for someone like her? She lifted her gaze and studied Melinda, who was still lost in her earnest daydream. A wedding... wearing a white dress and walking down the aisle. It seemed like something she would never experience in this lifetime. There was a time when she thought that by hiding her past and living as an ordinary person, things might turn out differently. But life hadn't worked out that way. Well, everyone makes a mistake once. Making the same mistake twice will just be foolish. Besides, even if she wanted to get married, the opportunity wasn't there. Just then, Eugene's tall, striking figure surfaced in her mind. That kiss on the top floor of Lewis Group—even now, the memory brought a flicker of amusement. For some reason, in that moment, she had simply wanted to kiss him. Maybe she had already recognized her feelings for Eugene but couldn't bring herself to act on them. If she made a mistake and let her emotions take over... she would only end up hurting him. Eugene and she came from different worlds. Why entangle him further? The three-month deadline was slowly drawing to a close. Her time was truly precious. Knowing that Carolyn had secretly filmed that video of her and Eugene—and would surely use it to stir up trouble—Chloe found herself almost looking forward to what those people would try next. ***** When Arthur brought Jennifer and Jenarth back to the Myers Manor, no one was more displeased than Madilyn. Madilyn had been upstairs enjoying an in-house SPA treatment. Hearing the commotion from the living room, she frowned in irritation. "What's all that noise? It's so loud." It sounded like a crowd had gathered. Arthur wasn't usually this noisy when he returned. "Mrs. Myers, it's Ms. Williams—she's back," a servant near the door informed her.Jennifer? At those words, Madilyn was so startled she didn't even wait for the high-end facial mask to be applied. She leaped up from the lounge chair. "How dare she come back! Isn't she afraid Charles will have her thrown out?" Madilyn detested Jennifer to the core. The woman had already left—what gave her the right to return now? As if she owned the place. Madilyn rushed out of the room and immediately spotted Jennifer standing in the living room. She was holding Jenarth's hand and directing staff to move furniture and mattresses. Seeing this, Madilyn snapped, "Jennifer, what do you think you're doing? Do you think Myers Manor is some hotel you can check into anytime you please? Just what are you trying to pull?" Hearing the sharp tone, Jennifer looked up, gave Madilyn a brief glance, then ignored her and continued instructing the workers beside her. "Take these up to the master bedroom in the attic." So not only was Jennifer ignoring her—she even had the nerve to order people to move mattresses into the attic master suite? She intended to live in the master bedroom? The woman had some nerve."Jennifer, know your place. Who gave you permission to act so presumptuously?" Madilyn strode down the stairs and planted herself directly in front of Jennifer. Jennifer looked calmly at Madilyn standing before her and offered a faint, cool smile. "Of course I know my place. Madilyn, if I've given these orders, I have my reasons. I apologize for not greeting you as soon as I arrived. But I'm not feeling well at the moment, so I won't be bowing to you today."
