Chronicles of the Weird
Lily darted behind the sofa in a flash, having already transformed into her werewolf form. She crouched there, cautiously peeking out with half her head, her silver hair falling to the floor, and her fluffy silver-white ears twitching keenly, ready for battle at any moment. Haoren saw that this mysterious creature had half a noodle and some vegetables stuck in her mouth, which severely disrupted her somewhat 'dignified' appearance. What further shattered her dignity was Lily's next move: she pointed at the black and white cat at Haoren's feet with trembling chopsticks, her tone almost on the verge of tears: 'Cat... cat!' 'Meow?' The black and white cat curiously tilted its head to glance at the unexpected guest in the house, and this single meow made Lily tremble a couple of times. But then, the cat ignored Lily with the grace that befits a feline. Haoren watched all this in a daze, his brain grinding away before he realized what was going on. He looked at Lily, who was as if facing a great enemy, in disbelief: 'You... are you afraid of cats?' 'I... I'm not afraid of cats!' Lily stubbornly lifted her head, like a proud fighting dog, 'I'm just nervous.' 'Isn't that the same thing!' Haoren felt that not only were his values insufficient, but even his brain wasn't enough. He even pointed at Lily in frustration without regard for the fact that she was a werewolf, and one he had just met, 'Come on! You're a werewolf, okay?!' 'I am a werewolf!'
Lily seemed to finally realize that her current reaction was a bit embarrassing, and perhaps it was Haoren's gaze and words that had stimulated the werewolf girl. In any case, she mustered her courage to sneak out from behind the sofa, then pretended to return to the dining table, but actually tiptoed along the wall of the living room, circling around to the other side of the room. 'Are you sure this cat is safe?'
'What's not safe about it?' Haoren casually picked up the black and white cat, 'I've never seen such an easy-to-raise cat, right, Roll?'
The black and white cat immediately meowed softly, looking extremely docile. Seeing this, Haoren was overjoyed and got up to fetch the cat's food bowl, filling it up for his pet and placing it on the floor beside the table: this was the cat's designated dining spot. At the same time, Haoren pointed at Lily, introducing her to his cat: 'Her name is Liu Lily, she's a werewolf... uh, it doesn't seem to mean much to you, but just know that she's our new guest, and your future meals will directly depend on how much rent she can pay, got it? Be respectful to your benefactor, okay?'
The black and white cat seemed to actually understand human speech, lifting its head to nod reservedly at Lily, who was standing guard a short distance away, indicating its acknowledgment, and then continued to eat.
Lily seemed to finally confirm the harmlessness of the black and white cat. She carefully eased back to the dining table, but still held her noodles and changed to the safest spot farthest from the cat. Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she asked, 'What did you call this cat just now?'
'Roll,' Haoren looked down at his only 'family member', 'Its name is Roll, with the three drops of water.'
Lily's silver hair and wolf ears slowly receded as her emotions settled (to be honest, Ren felt a bit of regret), and a look of surprise appeared on her face: 'How can it have such a strange name?!' 'This cat came to my house last year,' Ren chuckled, introducing the origin of his family cat, 'I don't know what breed it is. This place is desolate and remote, with stray cats and dogs causing trouble, so it's normal for one or two to sneak into people's homes when they're not paying attention. But this cat came and wouldn't leave, no matter how many times I tried to chase it away...' 'So you named it 'Roll', hoping it would leave sooner?' Lily asked, staring. 'No, it likes to suddenly jump onto the bed when I'm watching TV. Every time I would shout 'Roll' to chase it away, which worked at first, but over time, whenever I shouted 'Roll', it would come over even more energetically to rub against me—this cat thinks its name is Roll. And then it really became Roll.' Lily's eyes widened as she listened, then she lowered her head and silently ate for a while before muttering: 'I feel like I've come to a very strange place.' Ren rolled his eyes to the sky: Is there anything stranger in this house than you? A werewolf young lady who completely defies common sense! By the time they finished eating, it was already past nine o'clock, and 'Roll's' activity time arrived. The black and white kitten strutted up to the second floor to patrol its territory, while Ren threw the dishes into the kitchen sink to soak, planning to wash them tomorrow.
Then he lit a cigarette and sat in the living room, lost in thought—continuing to sort through his experiences of the day, while also marveling at his own remarkable ability to adapt. The werewolf was energetically running up and down the stairs, familiarizing herself with her new home in a manner that was almost rudely familiar, as if she were a long-lost friend. At each place she visited, she would vigorously sniff the air as if committing the scents to memory. Although she was currently in human form, Hao Ren couldn't help but imagine her with a pair of pointed ears and a tail that swished back and forth.
Under normal circumstances, if a tenant were so familiar and wandered around everywhere, he would have said a few words, but now he didn't want to say more than necessary: Wolves, after arriving in a new place, marking their territory is normal behavior. Now he just hopes that this werewolf's sense of territory could combine with human common sense, as long as she always remembers that this is actually someone else's home, and she herself is just a tenant, which shouldn't be difficult considering Lily's current personality.
Anyway, no matter what happens, Hao Ren is sure that he can't beat this werewolf.
Is it right or wrong to invite a non-human, highly combat-capable creature into his home like this?
When he calms down again, Hao Ren can't help but ponder this question, but in the end, he still feels that his choice was not wrong, and to be honest... he is actually quite looking forward to what will happen next.
This is a very suicidal mentality. A normal person should learn to seek benefits and avoid harms, not to be full of curiosity and rashly contact a mysterious new world that might take their life. But Hao Ren's mediocre and boring life has been going on for too long.
He likes reading novels, watching TV, and enjoying all those bizarre and strange fantasy stories. This is almost inevitably the state of life for every unemployed, unmarried, single young man who lives a empty life and has no worries about food. Although he is not so naive as to be obsessed with it and has not yet felt unbearable boredom in his daily life, and even if a "yes" or "ok" dialog box suddenly pops up on his computer, his first reaction would definitely be to pull the plug, but this does not prevent him from feeling eager to try when facing some "new stimuli". This is the most common curiosity psychology at work. Some people will step back hypocritically when their curiosity is satisfied, but another part of the people...
Probably will react like Hao Ren.
And no matter what, he still has to guard against that strange and dangerous big bat. Although he doesn't know why he was targeted by such a weird thing, since it has become a fact, he can only continue. Hao Ren is not someone who evades reality. He will actively find ways to improve his safety factor: for example, keeping that werewolf who seems to have strong combat power and is easy to talk to by his side.
"Oh right, landlord, here's the rent!"
Lily dashed up and down the stairs several times (during which she encountered 'Roll' twice on a narrow path, with screams heard both times), and finally remembered her current identity. With a lively and energetic spirit, she went back to her room to get her wallet, counted out the rent, and stuffed it into Hao Ren's hand, 'According to what you wrote in the advertisement, I'll pay three months of rent in advance. How much do you want for meals?' Oh, not only is she easy to talk to, but she's also a werewolf who pays rent obediently—where has this kind of good fortune been written in any book? 'Forget about the meal fee,' Hao Ren noticed Lily frown when she smelled the cigarette smoke (a dog's nose is useful), so he conscientiously stubbed out his cigarette, 'Anyway, having one more person won't make much difference. Also, don't keep calling me landlord, I have a name, just call me Hao Ren.' 'I got it, landlord.' 'Call me Hao Ren...' 'Okay, landlord.' '...Forget it, I'm going back to my room to sleep. Just make yourself at home. Don't go into those locked rooms, but you can do whatever you want elsewhere.' Hao Ren sighed and stood up to go back to his room, and Lily also turned to leave. However, halfway there, she found a new topic: 'By the way, landlord, you won't come to raid me at night, will you? It seems like there are only the two of us in this house, and this is the first time I've rented from a single male landlord...' Hao Ren almost fell to the ground, then turned his head to glare angrily at this extremely annoying werewolf: 'For my own safety, I will absolutely not raid you at night, so rest assured!'
