Soldier King Reborn

Chapter 4: Chasing the Evil on a Rainy Night

As Luo Zheng gradually regained his senses, he saw the ground littered with bullet casings and many bullet holes in the walls, indicating that the attack had been sudden, leaving no chance for retaliation. A fire afterward suggested that it was the work of a group of extremely vicious people, who absolutely could not be let off. Blood debts must be repaid in blood. With this thought in mind, Luo Zheng rushed to the telecommunication room, only to find that the wireless radio had been burned and was unable to make contact with the outside world, which caused his face to change dramatically. 'Boom!' Suddenly, a faint sound of an explosion came from afar. Luo Zheng was startled and rushed outside with a grim face. It was already late, the vast mountains and fields were shrouded in darkness, and the rain was pouring down so heavily that nothing could be seen clearly. 'Could it be thunder?' he wondered. Just as he was doubting, another faint explosion sounded, though weak, it was distinct and definitely not thunder. Luo Zheng quickly turned his head to look, and in the distant rainy night, a red glow flickered and then quickly disappeared into pitch darkness. 'It's a hand grenade explosion.'

Luo Zheng coldly stared into the depths of the stormy night, at the spot where the grenade exploded. His eyes flashed with a cold light, and as the rain pelted his body, he was filled with anger. With a fierce twist of his head, he rushed back to the barracks. It wouldn't be long before someone came to investigate the outpost, and the scene couldn't be disturbed, otherwise, it would destroy the clues. Luo Zheng found some paper and pen, wrote a few lines, then placed the note in a conspicuous position. He picked up a spent cartridge case to hold it down, and grabbed a standard-issue Type 95 automatic rifle from the outpost, only to find that the gun body had been damaged by bullets and was unusable. With no other choice, Luo Zheng set the gun aside. His gaze inadvertently fell on the place where firewood was usually kept, now reduced to ashes. The dust was blown away by the wind coming through the door, revealing a Mitsubishi bayonet. Luo Zheng knew that this Mitsubishi bayonet was the platoon leader's cherished possession, the only one in the entire outpost, and it was often used for play by everyone. Overjoyed, Luo Zheng picked up the Mitsubishi bayonet, looking at this one forged from alloy steel, and couldn't help but think: 'Could it be that the platoon leader and the brothers are watching over me from above, wanting me to use this knife to avenge them?' With this thought, Luo Zheng's determination to seek revenge grew even stronger, and he ran swiftly towards the arms storage room. The few weapons and ammunitions in the storage room had been looted, leaving no bullets or usable guns. Luo Zheng remembered the Class Deputy's treasured Type 65 Army knife, said to be a special award from higher-ups, which he always carried with him. He rushed back to the kitchen and carefully examined the charred remains of his comrade, but to no avail. The knife couldn't have been burned; it must have been taken by someone. Thinking of this, Luo Zheng was so angry his lungs felt like they were going to explode. 'Bastards!'

Luo Zheng cursed out loud, his face cold as he ran back to the nearby barracks. He found a military backpack and packed it with all the usable food, clothes, and other essentials. He changed into a clean set of clothes, put on a raincoat, grabbed a Mitsubishi bayonet and a military flashlight, and then slung the backpack over his shoulders before stepping out of the barracks. A thunderous boom erupted, and the downpour intensified. The howling wind added a sense of desolation to the wilderness and mountains, and the endless night was terrifying, as if it could swallow everything like a primordial beast. Luo Zheng's somewhat youthful face became resolute. Although he had never experienced a real battlefield, had never truly killed anyone, and couldn't even shoot a gun accurately, Luo Zheng had an indomitable spirit and a surge of passionate blood. To avenge his brothers, Luo Zheng was willing to risk everything. Not far from the entrance, in the square, Old Ma snorted angrily, nudging Luo Zheng with his head and scraping his front hooves, clearly sensing something too. Luo Zheng gently stroked Old Ma's neck, drew a machete from the cart, and said with a firm yet slightly regretful tone, 'Old Ma, I can't make you a wolf skin vest anymore. My brothers are still watching over me from above. I must go. Don't try to persuade me. You should find a place to wait out the rain too. The superiors will send someone to check on the situation here tomorrow. It's time for you to retire and take care of yourself.'

Speaking of which, with a resolute face, he strode towards the direction where the explosion sounded, unmistakably, his firm and powerful steps splashing in the rain, making a rustling sound, as if his brothers were fulfilling their duty, blessing, and saying goodbye... Born a hunter, Luo Zheng had lived in the forest since childhood, possessing an inexplicable familiarity and affection for it. His wilderness survival skills were not too bad, and after joining the army, his physical fitness had reached a new level. In the torrential rain, Luo Zheng walked very fast, almost jogging forward, gripping the machete in his hand tightly. The rainwater flowed down the handle, and a flash of lightning tore through the night sky, illuminating Luo Zheng's resolute face. The machete gleamed with a cold light, as if feeling the anger in its master's heart. Without the guidance of explosion sounds, Luo Zheng relied entirely on judgment to march urgently. The torrential rain could wash away all traces, making it impossible to find any clues. Such pursuit seemed somewhat blind, but Luo Zheng had no regrets. Doing nothing felt psychologically suffocating. Thinking of his brothers who died tragically, his heart felt like exploding, filling his body with strength. After more than two hours of relentless running, Luo Zheng couldn't catch his breath anymore, his physical strength was severely depleted, and he had to slow down his pace, switching to walking to continue on his way. Unconsciously, he came to a hillside and saw two bullet casings on the ground. Luo Zheng quickly swept the area with his military flashlight but did not find any suspicious figures. He hurried forward, picked up the bullet casings, and indeed, they were not mistaken, but he couldn't discern any clues. "Could it be that domestic special forces are coming after us?"

Luo Zheng guessed and his spirit was greatly invigorated, his blood boiling. As a soldier, Luo Zheng regarded the special forces as his goal and direction. Unfortunately, he was demoted to a border outpost after beating up a fellow recruit who had connections during basic training. It was a difficult life. Thinking that it might be the special forces coming to pursue and avenge him, Luo Zheng's spirit was greatly lifted. He carefully observed the terrain and, relying on his hunting intuition from childhood, chose a direction and rushed over. Before long, Luo Zheng saw some fragments of hand grenades lying quietly on the ground, telling of the events that had once taken place here. Luo Zheng picked up a fragment, glanced at it, and threw it away casually. He then searched around and quickly locked onto a small pit that was already filled with rainwater. This pit should have been caused by a grenade explosion. Luo Zheng observed the terrain and searched around. The traces of battle had been completely covered by the heavy rain, leaving only shrapnel and cartridge cases. Based on the terrain, Luo Zheng guessed the battle scene at that time. Then, based on the premise that the murderer fled westward and the pursuers came from the east, he judged the general direction and decisively continued the investigation. He didn't know how long he had been chasing, but the sky gradually brightened and the heavy rain finally stopped. Luo Zheng was tired and sleepy. He slowed down his pace, took out compressed biscuits from his bag and chewed them vigorously, then took out his military canteen and drank some water. He felt his eyelids drooping and his head dizzy. After a night of rapid marching and highly concentrated attention, he had consumed too much energy. Thinking of his hatred, Luo Zheng gritted his teeth and persevered.
