Reborn in Flames

Chapter 41: Not Getting Divorced

Su Huan's view was blocked by the umbrella, and she couldn't see the road. Seeing that the umbrella completely covered her, Gu Beixian's clothes were soaked with rain. She raised her hand to push the umbrella handle, pushing it towards him. Gu Beixian instinctively looked towards the broken bridge first. The man called A Yao had disappeared, appearing and disappearing mysteriously, like a fleeting flower, or an illusion. He secretly breathed a sigh of relief and pulled Su Huan closer to him. It was only after the fact that he realized, in that moment, he was actually afraid of losing her. It was the first time in his life he had felt this way, even surprising himself. By the time they returned to his grandfather's house, it was already noon. The two of them had a quick meal. Su Huan was tired and sleepy, walked into the bedroom, took off her clothes and wanted to sleep for a while. She hadn't slept much these days while keeping vigil for her grandmother. Gu Beixian followed her in, took off his coat and draped it over the chair by the bed, wanting to sleep with her. Su Huan's hoarse voice said softly, 'You go sleep in the next room. I haven't taken a shower in three days, I must smell.' Gu Beixian leaned over, bent down, and smelled her head, 'It does smell a bit.' Su Huan was so embarrassed that she quickly covered her head with her hands to prevent him from smelling. Gu Beixian smiled faintly, 'It's okay, I don't mind.' He lifted the quilt, pushed her into the bedding, took off his shoes, lay down beside her, hugged her, and said very gently, 'Your relatives are all watching. If we sleep in separate rooms, people will definitely gossip.'

Su Huan thought about it and realized it was true. Three years ago, when she married Gu Beixian, a few relatives from her own family who knew the inside story were saying behind her back that her mother had sold her to a disabled man for money. Now that Gu Beixian's leg was healed, those people were probably just waiting to laugh at her. Everyone needs face. Even if they were really going to get a divorce, in front of others, she still had to keep up appearances. Su Huan stopped forcing herself. She had been through too much these past few days; as soon as her head touched the pillow, she fell into a deep sleep. As she slept, she began to have nightmares. In the dream, the night was pitch black, withA fierce wind ignites a raging fire,Thick smoke fills the air。 The scorching flames engulfed her skin,The nose tip has a strong smell of gasoline and a pungent smell of smoke。 The skinny boy struggled to push her out of the big fire,I was hit in the leg by the burnt out beam of the house。 She reached out her hand to grab him and pull him, trying to drag him out of the fire, but she couldn't move him. She cried out loudly, "A Yao Ge, A Yao Ge..." Gu Beixian was awakened by her cries. Seeing her with her eyes closed, her face in pain, and tears streaming down her cheeks, he slightly furrowed his brows. He pulled out some tissues from the bedside table and gently wiped away the tears on her face, one by one. After wiping, he silently looked at her for a while, then pulled her into his embrace, stroking her back incessantly like before, gently patting her, coaxing her. But his heart felt as if it was stuffed with a rock, painfully sharp. His overly long eyelashes cast a shadow beneath his eyes. That shadow made his handsome face look indescribably melancholic, and the air pressure dropped to an extreme low. These past few days, he had abandoned everything to stay up with her, taking care of her without sleep. He thought he had done enough. Yet here she was, lying in his arms, painfully calling out for her A Yao Ge. He felt his whole heart had been misplaced. This wasn't the first time. He had tolerated her for a full three years. He had never been a man of good temper, rarely tolerating others, yet he had endured her again and again. Tolerance comes with emotions; while enduring, one can't help but resent, and this was an invisible crack between them. Lack of sleep for consecutive days brought his emotions to the brink ofout of control,Patience is also extremely poor,I really want to get angry with her,Then shake your sleeves and leave。 But she was too good, smart and beautiful, gentle and sensible, and now so fragile. He couldn't even bear to lose his temper with her, let alone argue. After taking several deep breaths, Gu Beixian barely managed to suppress the anger in his heart. He held the woman having nightmares tightly, gradually calming her down, and tucked the blanket around her. Getting out of bed, he picked up his coat, put it on, and went out, wanting to smoke a cigarette. There were still people in the yard, so he walked to the gate. In front of the gate was an abandoned pond. Opposite the pond was a sparse poplar forest, with messy wires threading through the treetops, swaying slightly in the wind. Gu Beixian took out a cigarette from his pocket, pulled one out, flicked the lighter, shielded the wind with his hand to light it, took a deep breath, and slowly exhaled a stream of blue-gray smoke. He squinted, looking at the forest opposite, smoking one cigarette after another. His usually refined and ascetic face revealed a hint of coldness. From the time the sun set until the night was pitch black. Scattered all over the ground were messy cigarette butts. After smoking half a pack of cigarettes, his irritable mood still couldn't completely calm down. His phone suddenly rang. Gu Beixian put the cigarette in his mouth, took out his phone from his pocket, glanced at the caller ID, and it was Chu Suosuo. He frowned and hung up directly. A few minutes later, the phone rang again, this time it was from his father, Gu Aoting. He answered the call. Gu Aoting asked, "When will you come back?"

Gu Beixian said emotionlessly, 'Su Huan's grandmother was buried today, and I'll go back early tomorrow morning.' Gu Aoting's voice faintly carried a hint of reproach, 'Why did it take so long? It's been almost four days in total.' 'She's very upset because her grandmother passed away, and I couldn't leave her alone.' 'Doesn't she have a mother, relatives?' 'Her mother is also very sad and has her own hands full. As for her relatives, they're just so-so; right now, the only person she can rely on is me.' Gu Aoting snorted through his nose, 'You're about to get a divorce, why treat her so well? Just give her some more money. Your time is much more valuable than money. Because of your absence, the projects you're involved in have all been postponed. Do you realize how much loss it has caused to the company?' Gu Beixian's eyelids drooped slightly, and he said indifferently, 'Deduct the losses from my personal account.' Gu Aoting said displeasedly, 'It's not about money, it's about the company's reputation!' Gu Beixian was silent for a moment, then said, 'Just this once, it won't happen again.' Gu Aoting grunted softly and ordered, 'Remember to get the divorce when you come back. Dragging out a divorce is such a hassle.'

In the bedroom. Su Huan turned over in her sleep and subconsciously reached out to hug Gu Beixian, only to find nothing there. Her heart skipped a beat, and she woke up. She rubbed her bleary eyes, feeling a bit empty and subtly worried when she didn't see him. She massaged her eyes to clear her groggy brain, threw off the covers, got dressed, and got out of bed to look for him. After searching several rooms and not finding him, and not seeing him in the yard either, Su Huan panicked and hurried to the gate. Guided by the light at the door, she saw a tall and proud figure standing by the pond in the night, as upright as a pine, on the phone, with a faint orange glow at the tip of his left hand. The man wore a black long overcoat, exuding an air of noble detachment, a style of his own. It was Gu Beixian. He was so unique that even just from the back, he could be distinguished from others at a glance. Su Huan's panicked heart suddenly settled down. Not wanting to disturb his phone call, she slowed her steps and walked towards him quietly. As she got closer, she heard him say to the person on the phone, 'I am a human, not an animal. When I was at my most difficult, it was Su Huan who stayed with me. Now that she is so fragile, I cannot just abandon her. Let's forget about the divorce.'

Su Huan's heart warmed, and her nose turned sour. She quickened her pace, stepped forward, and hugged him tightly, burying her head in his back, her arms encircling his waist. It was as if she was afraid that if she let go, he would disappear. Gu Beixian's eyes paused for a moment, and when he turned around and saw it was her, his gloomy expression eased slightly. Being hugged like this, the frustration in his heart dissipated by more than half. How spineless, he thought. Without saying a word, she had almost coaxed him. After giving Gu Aoting a perfunctory response, Gu Beixian hung up the phone, threw the cigarette butt on the ground, stamped it out with his foot, took Su Huan's hand, and asked softly, 'Why did you come out? It's cold outside, why didn't you wear more?' 'I thought you had left,' Su Huan said in a low voice, her hoarse voice sounding particularly helpless. Gu Beixian stroked her head, affectionately pulled her into his arms, and said, 'Even if I were to leave, I would say goodbye to you first. I won't leave without a word, don't worry.' Su Huan looked up at him with moist eyes, 'Are you going back tomorrow?' 'Yes, why don't you come back with me tomorrow?' Su Huan shook her head, 'I want to stay here a few more days, until after my grandmother's seventh day.' Gu Beixian paused, 'Alright, I'll leave two people to protect you.' 'Okay.' Seeing the cigarette butts scattered on the ground, Su Huan asked, 'Why did you smoke so much?' Gu Beixian said nonchalantly, 'I was a bit annoyed, but it's fine now.' Su Huan stared into his eyes, 'Is it because of the divorce?' 'No, it's official business.'

Gu Beixian shifted his gaze, avoiding hers. As he looked up, he caught a glimpse of a tall and sharp figure standing by the woods across the pond, wearing a black windbreaker, with dark short hair, and a mask covering his face. It was that Ah Yao again! His gaze instantly chilled several degrees, and he stared coldly at that figure for a few moments, maliciously curling the corners of his lips. He pinched Su Huan's delicate chin and lowered his head to kiss her forcefully.
