Reborn in Flames

Chapter 4: Too Intimate

Chu Suosuo's palm-sized pale face was too similar to her own. It was hard to pinpoint exactly where the resemblance lay; it was just a clear likeness at first glance. It took a closer look to tell them apart. Upon closer examination, Chu Suosuo had a delicate version of the features, with curved eyebrows, a slightly knitted brow, delicate nostrils, and cherry-like lips, giving her facial features a fragile quality like glass. Su Huan had a few more qualities of tranquility and indifference, as well as an underlying resilience in her bones. It was at this moment that Su Huan realized she was like a substitute in Gu Beixian's heart. She laughed at herself, no wonder he agreed to get married after just one look at her three years ago; the reason was here. 'Beixian, you've come,' Chu Suosuo's mother, Hua Qirou, greeted them with a forced smile. Her gaze was not very friendly when it swept over Su Huan. Gu Beixian nodded slightly in response. Hua Qirou walked to the bedside and gently patted Chu Suosuo's shoulder, 'Suosuo, your Beixian brother is here to see you.' Chu Suosuo slowly opened her eyes, her gaze sliding over Su Huan's face without much surprise, as if she had long known about their similar appearances. She looked at Gu Beixian, tears welling up in her eyes, and said softly, 'Beixian brother, I didn't try to commit suicide, I just couldn't sleep and took a few more sleeping pills. My mom overreacted and insisted on sending me to the hospital for stomach pumping. It's so late, and I'm sorry to trouble you and Sister Su Huan to come.' Hua Qirou, with reddened eyes, chided, 'Was it just a few pills you took?'

“You've drunk more than half the bottle, if I hadn't found out in time, you would have...” She covered her mouth and started to sob. Gu Beixian sat down beside the bed, looking down at Chu Suosuo with a doting tone, mixed with a bit of reproach, “Don't ever do such foolish things again, understand?” “Mhm.” Chu Suosuo pouted, nodding with teary eyes, looking obedient and pitiful. Gu Beixian took out a handkerchief and carefully wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes, his movements so gentle as if he were cleaning the most precious porcelain. His gaze was tender as water, filled with pity. Su Huan stared at Gu Beixian in a daze. In three years of marriage, he had never been so compassionate towards her. This was probably the difference between love and non-love. Even though Chu Suosuo had abandoned him during his toughest times, he still loved her. Perhaps for some men, no matter how deeply other women love them, it's useless unless it's the woman who has hurt them. With a fishbone stuck in her throat, Su Huan couldn't stay any longer, “You two chat, I'm leaving.” Hearing this, Gu Beixian turned his head to look at her, his expression very indifferent, “Explain it to Suosuo before you go.” Su Huan took a deep breath and said, “Miss Chu, Beixian and I...” Her throat choked up, she couldn't continue, and turned to leave. This was the first time she had defied Gu Beixian, and also the first time she had lost her composure in front of him. After the door closed, Chu Suosuo said to Gu Beixian, “Brother Beixian, you should go after Sister Su Huan, she seems angry.” Gu Beixian was silent for a moment, “It's okay, she won't be angry.” “Then she must have a really good temper.”

Chu Suosuo said softly, 'I didn't expect Sister Su Huan to have such a good temperament, gentle and graceful, elegant and composed, not at all like someone from a small mountain village. I originally thought she wouldn't be a match for you.' Gu Beixian felt a bit uncomfortable hearing this, 'Although she grew up in a small mountain village, her mother and grandmother were both teachers, and her grandfather was a calligrapher and painter restoration expert at the museum before he retired. It's not exactly a family without scholarly roots.' 'No wonder,' Chu Suosuo remarked. The two suddenly ran out of things to say. There was a moment of silence. Chu Suosuo cautiously probed, 'Sister Su Huan is beautiful and has such a good temper, you must love her very much, right?' Gu Beixian was looking down at his phone, slightly distracted, when he heard her voice and looked up, asking, 'What did you just say?' A flash of disappointment crossed Chu Suosuo's eyes, 'Beixian brother, you should still go and see Sister Su Huan off. It's late at night, it's not safe for her to go out alone as a girl.' Gu Beixian stood up, 'I'll take her back and then come to see you.' Chu Suosuo said softly, 'Go quickly.' Gu Beixian got up and left. Watching his retreating figure, Chu Suosuo's eyes dimmed. After he left, Hua Qirou chided, 'You child, you finally lured him here, how could you let him go?' Chu Suosuo frowned, 'Didn't you see that Beixian brother was restless? His mind is here, but he's worried about that Su Huan. It's better to go along with his wishes. If something happens to that woman on the way, he will blame himself, and might even blame me.' Hua Qirou clicked her tongue, 'You, not even grown up yet, but you have more schemes than your mother.'

By the time Gu Beixian found Su Huan, she was already nearing the hospital entrance. Her slender and straight figure, in the chilly spring breeze, was faintly visible, as beautiful as a bamboo shoot in an ink wash painting. Gu Beixian quickened his pace to catch up with her. Neither of them spoke, just walking shoulder to shoulder in silence, as dark as the night. After exiting the main gate, Su Huan turned to wait for a taxi by the roadside. Gu Beixian grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards the parking lot. Get in the car. Gu Beixian opened his bag, pulled out a card, and stuffed it into Su Huan's coat pocket, 'I was rude to you tonight, this is a little compensation, the password is your birthday.' Su Huan felt somewhat insulted. In his eyes, she was someone to be casually bought off with money, he couldn't even be bothered to coax her. He only knew how to cajole Chu Suosuo. Reaching into her pocket, Su Huan wanted to take out the card. Gu Beixian pressed down on her hand, his tone deep and unyielding, 'Keep it. Apart from money, I can't give you anything else.' Su Huan felt as if her heart was filled with sand, uncomfortable and gritty. What she wanted was never his money. Midway through the drive, Gu Beixian received a call from Old Madam Gu: 'Did you take my words as wind passing by your ears? Come back to me this instant.' 'I'm almost home,' Gu Beixian said indifferently and hung up the phone. Back at the Gu family's old house, as soon as the two entered, they saw Old Madam Gu collapsed on the sofa, her complexion pale, but her eyes were bright and sharp as she looked at them. Extending her hand, 'Give me your phone.'

Gu Beixian took out his phone and handed it to her. The old lady found Chu Suosuo's number and dialed it. After the call connected, she said very sternly, 'Miss Chu, our Beixian is a married man, please mind your bounds and don't call him unnecessarily! Since you broke up three years ago, don't look back, and certainly don't harbor any delusional thoughts about Beixian!' Without waiting for Chu Suosuo to respond, she hung up the phone and threw it onto the coffee table. Gu Beixian frowned, 'Suosuo has severe depression and can't handle stimulation.' The old lady sneered, 'Even if she has cancer, it has nothing to do with you, the person you should care about most is the wife by your side!'

Gu Beixian's gaze turned slightly cold, 'Grandma, you...' The old lady covered her mouth and started coughing violently. Su Huan hurried over to help her up. She assisted the old lady onto the bed to lie down, calmed her down, and then Su Huan returned to the guest room. Seeing that Gu Beixian had just finished a phone call and was putting his phone on the bedside table. Probably coaxing Chu Suosuo. Su Huan silently took a long pillow from the sofa and placed it in the middle of the bed as a barrier. She then took a quilt from the wardrobe, one for each person. She took off her coat, lifted the quilt, and lay down inside. It was already three in the morning, and she was extremely tired, her brain felt like it was filled with paste, she didn't want to think about anything, she just wanted to sleep. As soon as her head touched the pillow, she fell into a deep sleep. She slept until the sun was high in the sky. When she opened her eyes, Su Huan was caught off guard to see a face as handsome as if carved, looking at her with deep eyes. The two were so close, close enough to hear each other's breath. His warm breath brushed against her forehead, his deep eyes restrained yet hazy. And she was nestled in his arms, her hands tightly around his waist, her calves twined around his legs like willow branches, in an intimate posture. The air became hot and filled with a frenzied ambiguity. Su Huan, as if electrocuted, hurriedly let go of his waist and scrambled out of his arms, half-annoyed and half-complaining, 'How did I end up in your arms?'
