Reborn in Flames
The two arrived at the parking lot and got into the car. Su Huan fastened her seatbelt and asked curiously, "Why did you come to the museum?" Gu Beixian started the car and said casually, "I went abroad to handle some business and took the opportunity to photograph a batch of cultural relics to donate to the museum upon my return." Su Huan looked at him with respect, "I thank you on behalf of the country and the people." Gu Beixian glanced at her indifferently, "It's only been a few days since I last saw you, and you're already speaking to me in such an official tone? Don't think too highly of me. Donating cultural relics can increase corporate visibility and also allow for legitimate tax avoidance." Su Huan paused, then looked at his handsome and profound profile, smiling, "You're becoming more and more like a qualified businessman." Gu Beixian curled his lips, "Laughing at me for smelling of money?" Su Huan smiled, "Not at all." "Where shall we eat?" "Anywhere is fine."
Gu Beixian drove her to a detached small building by the river. The antique plaque was carved with two vibrant characters: Tang Palace. The exterior looked like a magnificent palace, resplendent and majestic. The cars parked at the entrance were all luxury vehicles, with their license plates covered. After getting out of the car, Gu Beixian handed the keys to the valet at the door. Su Huan followed him inside. The club was membership-based, with excellent privacy. Gu Beixian was clearly a regular; as soon as he entered the lobby, the manager warmly greeted him. After exchanging pleasantries, the manager eagerly led them inside. The corridor faintly echoed with the sound of silk and bamboo music, a melodious "still singing the song of the backyard flowers across the river." Occasionally, waitresses dressed in Tang suits glided by, as if dreaming back to the Tang dynasty. They arrived at the private room at the end of the corridor. Upon entering and taking their seats, the manager exchanged a few polite words before leaving. Gu Beixian handed the menu to Su Huan, "Order whatever you like." Su Huan took the menu and ordered only her favorite dish, while the rest were all dishes that Gu Beixian liked. After three years of marriage, she knew everything about him, and she couldn't forget even if she wanted to. After she finished ordering, Gu Beixian moved the menu in front of himself and asked the waiter to remove the dishes he liked, replacing them all with Su Huan's favorites. The waiter, confused by this subtle display of love, was puzzled. When the dishes were served, Gu Beixian used the public chopsticks to serve Su Huan, "Eat more." Su Huan also served him a dish, looking at his slightly thin face, she asked, "Were you very busy abroad for a week? You seem to have lost some weight."
Gu Beixian picked up another piece of fish and placed it on her plate, 'It's okay, the food abroad isn't as tasty as what you make.' Su Huan smiled sweetly, knowing he was just teasing her. Wherever he went, he stayed in the best hotels and naturally ate the best food. How could the dishes made by world-renowned chefs compare to her simple home-cooked meals? After eating for a while, Gu Beixian went out to take a business call. Su Huan got up to go to the restroom. The decoration here was very distinctive, even the restroom was adorned with an antique charm, very elegant. Coming out of the restroom, Su Huan walked back along the corridor. Just as she was about to turn the corner, a force suddenly came from behind, grabbing her clothes and pushing her into the small garden beside the corridor. Su Huan quickly turned her head to look. The person grabbing her was Chu Suosuo. After being harassed repeatedly, even the most patient person would become annoyed. Su Huan frowned and asked, 'What do you want?' Chu Suosuo didn't say a word, she dragged her behind a tall and dense Ficus lyrata tree, glaring at her aggressively, and said angrily, 'I just slapped you, and you had someone punch my face until it swelled. You wicked woman!' Su Huan calmly straightened her disheveled clothes and looked at her with a cool gaze, 'That person wasn't sent by me. Perhaps Miss Chu is too arrogant because of her favoritism and has offended too many people.' 'Ridiculous! I just returned to the country not long ago, and apart from you, I have no other enemies!' Su Huan looked indifferent, 'Think whatever you want, but as I've said before, please provide evidence.'
Instead of being able to produce any evidence, Chu Suosuo couldn't swallow her anger and her face turned blue with frustration. She retorted, 'What are you doing here?' Su Huan spoke in a calm tone, 'I'm at a restaurant, naturally I'm here to eat. What else could I be doing?' Chu Suosuo bit her lip, 'Are you with Brother Beixian?' 'Yes.' Chu Suosuo's expression changed, becoming very sinister, and she said sarcastically, 'The divorce agreement has been signed, and you're about to get divorced, yet you still follow Brother Beixian around to freeload food and drinks. How shameless!' These words were too harsh. The two were not divorced yet. As long as they were not legally separated, they were still husband and wife. Even having a meal together, she had to nitpick. Su Huan stood up straight, speaking coolly and clearly, 'Miss Chu, it's not that I look down on you. If we were on equal footing and competed fairly, you really couldn't beat me, because you're too impatient.' Chu Suosuo sneered, 'So what if you can keep your cool? Without a good father, everything is for nothing. I'm better at choosing my parents, and being able to choose is a skill. I've beaten you from the moment I was born!' Su Huan was angered into laughter, 'I used to envy you, but now I realize how pitiable you are. Apart from having a good father, you're useless!'
Such words were an unbearable humiliation for Chu Suosuo, who prided herself as the pampered daughter of heaven. Already seething with anger, she burst into a rage and raised her foot to kick Su Huan's leg. Su Huan quickly dodged backward, suddenly hearing a rush of footsteps. In a flash, her vision darkened as she was pulled into the embrace of a tall figure. Chu Suosuo kicked at thin air, staring in disbelief at the man who had appeared out of nowhere. Su Huan smelled the familiar scent of a man, crisp and warm, with a faint hint of tobacco. She looked up and saw Gu Beixian. She secretly breathed a sigh of relief, covering her pounding chest, and smiled at him, 'Why are you here?' Gu Beixian's face remained unflappable, but his gaze was cold as he looked indifferently at Chu Suosuo and said to Su Huan, 'After the call, I didn't see you when I got back, so I asked the waiter and came looking for you. Are you alright?' Su Huan shook her head. Chu Suosuo reacted quickly, immediately toning down her previous arrogance and standing there meekly, bowing her head and saying, 'Brother Beixian, I wasn't going to kick Sister Su Huan, I just felt uncomfortable in my shoes and lifted my foot to check the heel, you misunderstood me.' A hint of a cold smile appeared at the corner of Gu Beixian's lips, 'I'm not blind.' Chu Suosuo was slightly taken aback, pouting and on the verge of tears, 'Brother Beixian, don't wrong me.' 'Suosuo, Suosuo, where have you been?' A somewhat aged male bass voice suddenly came from not far away. Chu Suosuo's eyes lit up, she tilted her head up and replied, 'Dad, I'm in the small garden over here.'
The sound of footsteps grew closer. Soon, a man around sixty years old approached, with gray temples, bushy eyebrows, big eyes, and a robust figure. He wore a well-tailored dark gray suit, an expensive watch on his wrist, and exuded an air of profound elegance. It was Chu Suosuo's father, Chu Yanru. Chu Yanru glanced at Su Huan, smiled, and greeted Gu Beixian: 'Beixian, you're here too.' Gu Beixian responded with a faint 'Hmm,' his lips curling slightly, but his eyes held no trace of a smile, speaking distantly: 'Uncle Chu, please restrain your daughter's behavior in the future. If this continues, you'll spoil her.' The term 'your daughter' was too distant. Tears welled up in Chu Suosuo's eyes all at once. She touched her face, tears streaming down, and said: 'Brother Beixian, you're biased. It was clearly Sister Su Huan who bullied me first. She had someone beat up my face until it swelled like a pig's head, and it took a whole week to go down, it hurt so much.' Gu Beixian's fingers lightly touched Su Huan's shoulder, his voice calm: 'About that incident, Su Huan was unaware. Don't provoke her again, and you'll naturally be fine.' Chu Suosuo wanted to say more. Gu Beixian lost his patience, looked down at Su Huan, and said gently: 'Let's send you back to the museum first.'
Su Huan nodded. Gu Beixian turned and walked away. However, Su Huan didn't move, because Chu Yanru was staring at her with a very strange look in his eyes. That gaze was gloomy and complex, as if it contained disdain, contempt, disgust, anger, and hostility, making her feel extremely uncomfortable. She felt as if she were being roasted on a fire or fried in a pan of oil, indescribably distressed. It was hard to imagine that such a distressing gaze could come from this refined and elegant old man. They say eyes can kill, and today Su Huan truly experienced it. She wanted to flee this place immediately, but her legs felt as if they were rusted, unable to move an inch. Gu Beixian walked a few steps, then seeing Su Huan still standing there motionless, her complexion pale to an unusual degree. "Why aren't you leaving?" He returned, his peripheral vision catching Chu Yanru's gaze that hadn't been retracted in time. Gu Beixian's expression suddenly paused, then he took Su Huan's hand and held it in his palm. Without looking at Chu Yanru, he only looked straight ahead and said nonchalantly, "This woman has been with me through hardships. Anyone who touches her is crossing me." His tone of speaking was not heavy at all, and there was little expression on his face, but it gave off an invisible sense of oppression. Like a warning, and like a threat. Chu Yanru's face instantly darkened. Chu Suosuo let out a cry and ran away in tears.
