Reborn in Flames

Chapter 29: Do You Love Me

A single sentence successfully piqued Su Huan's curiosity. Recalling her grandmother's words last time, it was possible that Huang Que had been instigated. At that moment, she suddenly looked at Chu Suosuo, her gaze rather intriguing. Su Huan lowered her head to look at her left hand in a splint. She really wanted to know if her injury had anything to do with Chu Suosuo. After quietly waiting for a while, she heard Gu Beixian utter a low 'hmm'. Su Huan turned back, picked up the first-aid kit, and walked towards him, asking, "Was Huang Que caught?" Gu Beixian ended the call on his phone, turned to look at her, and said, "She's missing." Su Huan slightly knitted her brows, "Missing?" "Yes, the people I sent have searched her home and her relatives' homes, but couldn't find her. Her family has already reported to the police. We'll wait for news." Su Huan's gaze became subtle, "The timing of her disappearance is quite coincidental. You just sent people to find her, and she immediately disappeared." Gu Beixian sat down on the sofa, his long legs crossed, and said indifferently, "Her brother was caught tomb raiding. After being imprisoned, he couldn't hold out and would surely implicate some people. Naturally, there would be those seeking revenge showing up. Her disappearance is not surprising." Su Huan didn't speak. In the middle of the night, she didn't want to argue with him. Without evidence, meaningless argument is just quarreling, and quarreling solves no problems, only consuming feelings. She placed the first-aid kit on the coffee table, walked over to him, and carefully examined his right hand. Several small pieces of broken glass were stuck in the palm and fingers of his hand. She chided, "Why are you so careless? I injured my left hand, and now you've injured your right hand. Getting hurt has to come in pairs."

Gu Beixian withdrew his hand, unconcerned, and said, 'It's just a flesh wound, it'll be fine in a day or two, it doesn't hurt.' 'How could it not hurt? You're not made of iron.' Su Huan took a disinfectant cotton ball to clean the alcohol and bloodstains from his hand, fetched a bright flashlight to illuminate the area, and used tweezers to carefully remove the pieces of broken glass embedded inside. During those two years, Gu Beixian couldn't stand on his legs, he was depressed and irritable, often throwing things in fits of anger, and getting injured was a common occurrence. Su Huan had long since become adept at dealing with wounds, handling them quickly and skillfully. After cleaning up, she applied medicine to him and softly admonished, 'Be careful next time, if you hurt yourself again, I'll be angry.' Her tone was half-reproachful, half-complaining, but her voice was gentle and soft, more healing than the medicine itself. The lingering displeasure in Gu Beixian's heart dissipated a little. He lowered his gaze, looking into her dark, watery eyes, his gaze gradually becoming profound, but his voice remained unchanged, 'Didn't we agree to have a child? Why are you taking contraceptive pills?' Beneath an expression that did not reveal joy or anger, he suppressed his true emotions. Su Huan was momentarily startled, but quickly turned her face away and calmly said, 'I think we're still young, there's no need to rush the matter of having a child. A child is not a toy; it's a life. Once born, we have to take responsibility for it. A child can ease conflicts, but it can also exacerbate them, yet it cannot solve the most fundamental issues.' Gu Beixian slightly lifted the corners of his lips, his gaze fixed on her pure and beautiful profile, the emotions in his eyes ambiguous, 'You're quite decisive.' Su Huan didn't respond, closed the medicine box, and smelling the faint scent of alcohol on him, asked, 'How much did you drink?' 'Not much.'

“I'll go make you some hangover soup,” she said, standing up, but her wrist was grabbed by Gu Beixian. With a slight effort, he pulled her into his embrace, his chin rubbing against her ear as he whispered, 'No need, I didn't drink much. You have a hand injury, don't bother.' Su Huan was held by him, her back against his broad chest, and she could feel the sound of his heartbeat, beating very fast. Under normal circumstances, she would feel warmth, her heart would race, and her body would heat up. But now, her heart was filled with mixed emotions. After a few seconds of silence, she said, 'It's late, go wash up and sleep.' 'Okay.' Gu Beixian let her go and stood up. The two went upstairs to the bathroom. Su Huan helped him unbuckle his watch and shirt buttons, opened his belt, and asked, 'Do you want me to help you wash?' 'No need, my left hand is still usable, a quick rinse will do.' 'Okay.'

Su Huan walked to the shower area, turned on the faucet, and adjusted the water temperature for him. She stepped back and let Gu Beixian go in to take a shower. As her gaze glanced over his body, her face turned slightly red. She went to the sink, squeezed toothpaste for him. She walked out of the bathroom, did not return to the room, but stood quietly at the door waiting. This was what she had become accustomed to doing two years ago. When the sound of water in the bathroom stopped, she pushed the door and entered, took a towel to wipe the water droplets off Gu Beixian's body. He wiped the front himself. She helped him wipe the parts of his back that he couldn't reach. Looking at his lean and muscular body, the beautiful muscle lines, and the dashing back, her nose felt sour. Before, when she saw him sitting in the wheelchair, depressed and unhappy, she had prayed every day that he could stand up. But now that he really stood up, his aunt and father thought she was not good enough for him. Those who consider themselves part of the upper class really value profit over emotion, with interests above all else. After wiping, Gu Beixian put on his bathrobe. When tying the belt of the bathrobe, Su Huan used her right hand, and he used his left. The two pulled one end of the belt each, and with a pull and a wrap, they tied a knot seamlessly, cooperating perfectly. Gu Beixian smiled faintly, "What do you call this between us?" Su Huan thought for a moment, tilted her head to look at him, and curved her eyes, "Mutual support in adversity?" Gu Beixian seemed to think of something and slowly replied, "Yes, mutual support in adversity." He lowered his gaze, staring at her curved eyebrows and eyes, and asked, "If I had no money three years ago, would you have married me?"

Su Huan's heart skipped a beat. These were the words Gu Aoting had said to her tonight, and now he was asking her again, a sense of foreboding slowly creeping into her heart. She replied with feigned casualness, 'Why ask such a meaningless question?' 'It is rather meaningless. Then let me ask another, if I were penniless now, would you leave me?' Su Huan thought seriously for a moment and said, 'I have money, I'll support you.' Gu Beixian subtly raised his eyebrows, 'How much money do you have?' 'One hundred and fifty-six million.' Gu Beixian smiled, playing along with her act of surprise, 'How did you get so much money? Haven't you spent any of the money I gave you over the years?' 'I hardly spend any money. You regularly send people to pay for my grandmother's medical expenses. As for living expenses, she has a pension every month, and so does my mother. Every time I give my mother money, she refuses to take it, insisting that I save it for myself. My daily expenses on food and drink are all covered by you. For clothes and makeup, I just use the shopping cards you gave me for the mall.' Gu Beixian stroked her head, 'Our Huanhuan is really good at saving money.' Su Huan smiled even sweeter, 'I can not only save money, but also make money. Once my hand is better, I'll go to work. You might not know, but I earn quite a bit from restoring ancient paintings. By the way, in our line of work, we can also make money by finding treasures at bargain prices. The replicas I painted were previously hung under my grandfather's name, and at the Hong Kong auction, the most expensive one sold for five hundred thousand. If you run out of money, I'll just paint more in the future.' Gu Beixian's smile deepened as he praised, 'Our Huanhuan is so amazing.'

Su Huan couldn't help but praise, and then said, 'I also know a bit about financial management. Just a few days ago, I deposited one hundred and fifty million for a three-year fixed term, and the bank gave me a 4% interest rate for the large deposit certificate. The interest alone is eighteen million.' She cupped his face and said sweetly, 'Husband, even if you run out of money, I can still support you well.' Gu Beixian's dark eyes lit up, as if stained with starlight. He raised his hand to press her into his embrace, kissed her hair gently, and asked in a low voice, 'Why are you so kind to me?' 'Because you are good to our whole family.' Gu Beixian's gaze darkened slightly, 'Just because of this?' Su Huan felt that he was being a bit sentimental tonight, and laughed, 'Then what do you want me to say?' Gu Beixian stared at her shadow on the ground, his gaze becoming deeper and deeper. After a long while, he spoke, 'Do you love me?' Su Huan suddenly sobered up, the smile on her face freezing. Of course she loved him, but what was the point of saying so at a time like this? A marriage on the verge of collapse, no matter how much love, it couldn't withstand reality. She didn't believe that a light 'love' could change anything. In the end, he would still listen to his father. After a long time, Su Huan smiled, slowly withdrew from his embrace, tiptoed, gently kissed his chin, and said softly, 'Let me help you dry your hair, and go to sleep.'

She turned around, took the hair dryer from the storage cabinet, and asked him to sit down. She skillfully blew his hair. Listening to the humming sound of the hair dryer and smelling the faint scent on her, Gu Beixian curled the corners of his lips, smiling but not smiling. She was only kind to him, but she didn't love him. No matter what he did, he could not replace her Brother Yao. After drying his hair, they went to bed. This time, Su Huan quickly fell into a deep sleep. In the middle of the night, a thunderclap sounded, and a spring thunder drilled in through the half-closed window, immediately waking Su Huan up. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and looked beside her, but it was empty. Gu Beixian was gone. Suddenly remembering something, Su Huan shuddered violently, fully woke up at once, got up, grabbed her clothes to put on, jumped off the bed and went to look for him.
