Reborn in Flames

Chapter 27: I Can't Do It

Coming to Gu Beixian's side, Su Huan looked up at him with a smile on her small face. He was extremely tall, standing there straight as a pine, against a backdrop of light, so handsome that he seemed unreal. Su Huan's eyes curved into smiles as she looked at him, her eyes shining like stars, her little finger gently brushing against his much larger finger. Gu Beixian felt it, smiled and took her hand, his other hand rubbing the back of her head, his voice softening as he said, 'There was a traffic jam on the way, I'm late, sorry.' Su Huan smiled faintly, 'It's okay, I just got here too.' Gu Fengjiao felt annoyed, clicking her tongue wanting to say something, but afraid of angering Gu Beixian and not being able to save face. She picked up her wine glass and moved elsewhere. Gu Beixian, holding Su Huan's hand, walked to the table and sat down. He picked up a piece of bluefin tuna sashimi with silver chopsticks and brought it to Su Huan's lips, 'Bluefin tuna, just shipped from abroad this morning. This is the best part of the fish, the belly meat, try it.' The bluefin tuna is known as the 'king of sashimi' and 'the Rolls-Royce of fish,' the most top-tier delicacy in the world of fish. Su Huan opened her mouth to take it and slowly chewed. The raw fish had a refreshing texture, full of elasticity, with a lingering fragrance and particularly delicious taste. After swallowing, Su Huan smiled at him, 'Delicious.' She picked up her chopsticks and also took a piece, bringing it to his lips, 'You eat too.' Gu Beixian pushed it away, 'You eat, don't worry about me.' In the midst of her busyness, Qin Shu glanced over from a distance towards Gu Beixian and Su Huan, and upon seeing this scene, the corners of her lips slightly lifted. A wealthy lady in a green cheongsam next to her also saw it and said, 'Your son is really good to your daughter-in-law.'

Qin Shu humbly said, 'It's okay. My daughter-in-law is worthy, the young lady has an especially good character.' The lady in the green cheongsam said, 'That's good. But this scholarly family, it doesn't seem to be of much use to us who are in business, right?' Qin Shu gave a perfunctory smile, bent down to pick up a piece of cake from the table, and handed it to her, 'Mrs. Li, the desserts ordered this time taste pretty good, have a try.' 'Thank you.' The lady in the green cheongsam took it and started to eat it with a spoon, her talkative mouth blocked. Suddenly, a small commotion came from outside the door. Su Huan turned her head to look towards the door. A man in a black suit, over sixty years old, strode in. He still had a straight figure, broad shoulders, neatly trimmed gray hair, sharp eyebrows, and an imposing presence without anger. It was Gu Beixian's father, Gu Aoting. Su Huan was just about to stand up to greet him. She saw that following Gu Aoting was a petite young woman, Chu Suosuo. Coincidentally, she was also wearing a night blue starry dress, adorned with countless bright diamonds, sparkling. Only Su Huan's was a floor-length gown, while Chu Suosuo's was a short version, with a fluffy skirt that revealed two straight and white legs. Su Huan's style was dignified and gentle. Chu Suosuo's was playful and cute. Su Huan turned her head to look at Gu Beixian, 'Did you invite her?' Gu Beixian slightly shook his head, 'Neither my mother nor I invited her, it should be my father who called her over. He and Suosuo's father were classmates since childhood, and later they both entered their family's company to take over, they've always had business dealings and have a good relationship.'

Su Huan pursed her lips and remained silent. She rarely dealt with Gu Aoting. Only during the holidays, when they gathered for a family dinner at the old house, did she occasionally see him and exchange greetings. After Chu Suosuo entered the room, she busily greeted the male and female guests familiarly, calling out to each one: 'Hello Uncle Zhang, Hello Aunt Li, Hello Aunt Tang...' With her injured hand hidden behind her back, she smiled sweetly, presenting a gentle and well-behaved demeanor. Those people praised her one after another: 'Girls change a lot when they turn eighteen, Suosuo is really getting more and more beautiful.' Chu Suosuo's eyes squinted into slits as she laughed, 'Thank you Uncle Zhang, thank you Aunt Li, thank you Aunt Tang...' Seeing that Su Huan was staring at Chu Suosuo, Gu Beixian gently patted her hand and said, 'They are all from the same circle, these people have watched Suosuo grow up, they are very familiar with her.' She didn't know if she was being oversensitive or what, but at this moment, Su Huan felt like an outsider, accidentally intruding into their circle, unable to blend in no matter how hard she tried. Soon, Chu Suosuo spotted Gu Beixian, her eyes lit up, and she ran over in her high heels, calling out happily, 'Brother Beixian!' Compared to her enthusiasm, Gu Beixian's attitude was obviously much more indifferent, only slightly curling the corners of his lips and nodding slightly in response. Chu Suosuo didn't feel embarrassed, ran over, stood beside him, sized up Su Huan, and exclaimed in admiration, 'Wow, Sister Su Huan is dressed so beautifully today.' She pressed down the excessively puffed skirt and said shyly, 'We are wearing the same dress today, what a coincidence.'

Su Huan mimicked Gu Beixian's manner and nodded slightly at her, then reached out to pick up a piece of tiramisu and started eating it, head bowed. To Chu Suosuo, she couldn't even be bothered to pretend. Chu Suosuo said to Gu Beixian with a pitiful look, 'Sister Su Huan doesn't seem to like me much.' Gu Beixian slightly lifted his chin and pointed to the seat opposite, 'You go and eat over there.' Chu Suosuo looked at him, hesitating to speak, and said reluctantly, 'Alright then.' After sitting down opposite, her gaze lingered on Gu Beixian. After finishing his socializing with the crowd, Gu Aoting walked over to Gu Beixian and Su Huan. As he approached, Su Huan stood up and called out to him with a smile, 'Dad.' Gu Aoting glanced at her indifferently and responded very lightly, then said to Gu Beixian, 'You come with me to the study upstairs.' Gu Beixian responded with a faint 'Hmm,' and said gently to Su Huan, 'Take your time eating, don't hold back on what you want to eat. It's your own home, don't be restrained. Call me if you need anything.' Su Huan smiled and said, 'Okay, you go ahead.' Once Gu Beixian left, Chu Suosuo approached with a wine glass, looking quite smug, 'So what if everyone in the Gu family likes you? Uncle Gu likes me, I am the best choice for his ideal daughter-in-law.' Su Huan thought of Gu Aoting's cold attitude towards her just now, which must have been Chu Suosuo's doing. After all, it wasn't the first time she had added fuel to the fire and told tales out of school. Su Huan felt very uncomfortable inside, as if she had swallowed countless flies, utterly disgusted. She gripped the cup in her hand and said coldly, 'Are you done?'

"Alright, now please disappear from my sight immediately, go squat wherever you wish. Today is my mother-in-law's birthday, and I don't want to cause anyone any displeasure." Chu Suosuo looked at the cup in her hand, remembering how she had smashed the thermos cup onto her mother's face last time. She instinctively felt a pain in her nasal bone and subconsciously touched her nose before turning around and walking away.

It was nearly nine o'clock when Qin Shu came over and asked Su Huan, "Where is Bei Xian?" Su Huan stood up and said, "He's been called to the study upstairs by Dad." Qin Shu glanced at her watch, "It's time to cut the cake, go upstairs and call them, will you?" Su Huan smiled and replied, "Okay, Mom."

She lifted the hem of her dress and went to the second floor. It was very quiet upstairs, and Su Huan, fearing she would disturb their conversation, walked very softly. She arrived at the door of the study. Just as she raised her hand to knock, she heard Gu Aoting's voice from inside, "Suosuo is more suitable for you. I've cooperated with her father for so many years that many of our business interests have become inseparable. If you two get married, it will be a great help to our family's business. On the way here, I've indirectly asked Suosuo, and it seems she still likes you very much."

Su Huan felt a chill run down her spine, as if someone had poured a bucket of cold water over her head, cooling her from head to toe. After an unknown amount of time, she heard Gu Beixian say, "In my most difficult and desperate times, it was Su Huan who stayed with me." Gu Aoting sneered, "Money is all that matters; there's nothing money can't solve. Three years ago, if you hadn't had money, she wouldn't have married you either."

Over the years, you've given her so much money, bought a house for her family, found a kidney donor for her grandmother, covered all the medical expenses, and supported three generations of her family. You've already gone above and beyond in kindness and righteousness." Gu Beixian fell silent for a moment before saying, "The biggest difference between humans and animals is that humans have emotions." Gu Aoting frowned, "You're a man, and men shouldn't be indulged solely in romance and affection. The business world is full of ups and downs, and it's safer to sail with two ships than alone. After allying with the Chu family through marriage, if something happens to the company, the Chu family can lend a helping hand. What can Su Huan do?" Su Huan stood quietly outside the door, like a withered tree that had been struck by lightning, stripped of its splendor, feeling extremely distressed. A deep sense of helpless sorrow surged within her. Indeed, what could she, a restorer of ancient paintings, do to help the Gu Corporation, no matter how skilled she was? It's like climbing a mountain; she couldn't be of any assistance. But she didn't leave, wanting to hear what Gu Beixian had to say. However, she waited for a very long time and never heard his voice. She smiled at herself self-mockingly. She had thought that his proposal for divorce was because he couldn't forget his past feelings for Chu Suosuo, but now it seemed there was another reason as well. Su Huan turned and walked away, only to realize that her legs were extremely weak when she lifted them. By the time she managed to lean on the wall and slowly made her way downstairs, Gu Beixian's voice came from the study: "I'm sorry, I can't do it." Unfortunately, Su Huan could no longer hear him.
