Reborn in Flames

Chapter 24: The Substitute is You

Last night, Su Huan didn't sleep well at her grandfather's old house, and tonight she was tossed around by Gu Beixian, so she slept very soundly. She slept until dawn, too tired even to have nightmares. When she doesn't have that nightmare from thirteen years ago, she won't talk in her sleep, nor will she call out for 'A-Yao Ge' in her dreams. The next morning, she opened her eyes and looked beside her; Gu Beixian had already gotten up. She carefully avoided her injured hand, got dressed, and got out of bed. Walking into the bathroom, she saw that Gu Beixian had even squeezed toothpaste for her. She smiled, picked up the toothbrush, and slowly started brushing her teeth. After washing up, Su Huan held onto the railing and went downstairs. Gu Beixian was setting the prepared breakfast on the dining table. Seeing her, his eyes crinkled into a handsome smile, his face brimming with the glow of spring, and he called out, 'Come and eat, it's all your favorites.' He seemed to be in a very good mood. He was handsome, with facial features as perfectly sculpted as if they were carved, with slashing eyebrows and bright eyes. When his lips lifted slightly in a smile, there was both deep affection and a touch of carefree abandon, which was captivating. Su Huan couldn't help but smile as well, 'Why didn't you call me? I could have done it.' 'Your hand isn't healed yet, and it's not like I can't do it. It's just a small effort.' Su Huan sat down at the dining table, and Gu Beixian handed her a spoon. The breakfast was abundant, a mix of Western and Chinese cuisine, with fried eggs, grilled steak, grilled salmon, tiramisu, toasted bread, and even eight-treasure porridge, along with a portion of fruit. Su Huan sipped the porridge slowly; it was well-cooked, soft and delicious. Hearing Gu Beixian say, 'Su Huan, let's have a child. If you get pregnant, I won't leave.'

Su Huan's hand holding the soup spoon paused, feeling quite surprised. He was the one who had been contracepting all along, the one who proposed divorce, and now suddenly he wanted a child and didn't want a divorce. It was also him. Su Huan was silent for a while, then slowly raised her head to look at him and asked earnestly, 'Can you stay away from Chu Suosuo in the future?' Gu Beixian's eyes dimmed slightly, and after a moment, he said, 'She has severe depression, which is related to me. I've asked the doctor, and her emotional state is very important; she might commit suicide if she thinks too much. Moreover, the Gu family and the Chu family have business dealings and are in the same city; we can't avoid seeing each other.' After saying so much, the answer was only two words: No. Su Huan smiled self-mockingly, lowered her eyelids, stared at the porridge in her bowl, and said softly, 'I can endure anything, but I can't stand sharing my husband with another woman. I'm really not as magnanimous as you think, I'm sorry.' Gu Beixian paused, 'In my eyes, she and Nanyin are on the same level.' 'Nanyin doesn't call you in the middle of the night, asking you to come over, nor does she cuddle and hug you.' Gu Beixian took a sip of water from his cup, his tone very indifferent, 'There is no perfect marital relationship; most couples endure each other, accommodating one another.' Su Huan always felt that there was something implied in his words. After pondering for a while, she finally grasped the meaning. She took a deep breath and said, 'A Yao has been dead for a long time; he doesn't need your endurance, and I don't want to endure Chu Suosuo either.' Gu Beixian's lips curled into a cold smile, his gaze deep and unreadable as he stared at her for a long time, saying ambiguously, 'Is that so?'

Su Huan didn't respond, just lowered her head and continued to eat porridge. If this went on, it would turn into an argument, and she didn't want to fight with him. Arguing was too hurtful to the feelings; their already precarious marriage would crumble even faster if they kept quarreling. Even now, she still loved him very much. She had never loved anyone so deeply in her life. She was a bit slow to warm up, finding it difficult to fall in love with someone, but once she did, it was hard to back out. After finishing the meal, Su Huan stood up, ready to clear the dishes. Gu Beixian held her hand and said, 'Let Sister Liu and the cleaning lady take care of it later. If you want to read at home, go ahead; if you want to go shopping, do that.' He took out a card from his wallet and handed it to her, 'Use my card.' Su Huan didn't accept it, 'I have money.' Gu Beixian tucked the card into her pocket, 'The password is your birthday, 618618. When you go out, call the driver to take you, and be safe on the road.' 'Okay.' After Gu Beixian left, Su Huan also went out, heading to pick a birthday gift for her mother-in-law, Qin Shu. Qin Shu was a well-known wedding dress designer with her own brand, Shuqin. Previously, her career focus was in Paris, but this year she had shifted her focus to the domestic market. Su Huan didn't interact much with her, only knowing that she had an elegant temperament, a cold personality, and was very reserved. She arrived at the Hermes specialty store. Su Huan walked in, picking out a bag for Qin Shu. She chose a 30cm amber yellow platinum bag, worth over a hundred thousand, and planned to pair it with items of equal value, such as some silk scarves and cushions. While selecting, a coquettish voice came from behind, 'Sister Su Huan, you're here to pick a bag too.'

Su Huan's scalp tingled slightly, and she turned her head to look back. It was Chu Suosuo. Dressed in designer brands and adorned with jewelry, she carried an expensive crocodile leather platinum bag. With her delicate frame, she walked with a haughty stride. Su Huan responded with a faint 'mm'. Chu Suosuo, like glue, sidled up to her and asked the salesgirl beside her, 'Which style does Sister Su Huan fancy?' The salesgirl picked up the amber yellow platinum bag that she had shown interest in and said, 'It's this one, Miss Chu.' A hint of mockery flashed in Chu Suosuo's eyes as she stared at the unbranded bag slung over Su Huan's shoulder and sneered, 'Sister Su Huan, coming from a small mountain village, you might not be very familiar with luxury goods. To buy a bag here, you need to spend over a hundred thousand to qualify, do you have that?' Su Huan's gaze turned slightly cold, 'Of course, I do.' She wasn't obsessed with luxury items; the bag she carried was one she had casually picked up when leaving home, and she couldn't remember the brand, only that it was convenient for carrying things. However, during festivals and holidays, she would always choose some gifts that Gu Nanyin and the old lady liked. Gu Nanyin particularly loved Hermès bags, and she had given her several. Chu Suosuo let out an 'oh', speaking in a sarcastic tone, 'Sister Su Huan really doesn't hold back when spending Brother Beixian's money.' Su Huan laughed, 'He's my husband, I'll spend as I wish, there's no need for an outsider like you to nitpick, right?' Chu Suosuo snorted coldly, 'I've been childhood sweethearts with Brother Beixian for over a decade, growing up together, we have many shared memories of life. If we really get down to it, you're the one who's the outsider.'

“You might not know, but my first Hermes bag was given to me by Brother Beixian,” Su Huan said, too lazy to bicker with her. She picked out a few silk scarves, accessories, ashtrays, blankets, and other items, accumulating a shipment worth over a hundred thousand. She pulled out a card from her wallet and handed it to the salesgirl, “Please swipe the card.” “Okay, please wait a moment,” the salesgirl said, taking the card to the checkout to process the payment. Su Huan needed to sign, so she followed on foot. Chu Suosuo also came up, pouting and saying, “That’s Brother Beixian’s card, right? You refuse to leave him no matter what, you’re just after his money, aren’t you?” Su Huan’s expression was indifferent as she said to the salesgirl, “Please tell Miss Chu whose name is on this card.” The salesgirl smiled at Chu Suosuo and said, “Miss Chu, the account holder for this card is Su Huan, Miss Su.” Su Huan smiled calmly and asked leisurely, “How much balance is left in the card? Please check for me.” The salesgirl stared at the computer and said respectfully, “Miss Su, the balance in your card is one hundred and fifty-six million.”

Chu Suosuo's face changed color in a flash, turning red and then white, remaining silent for a long time. Su Huan stared at her face, the corners of her lips curling up ever so slightly. She had never been one to engage in petty comparisons, but dealing with a calculating person like Chu Suosuo in this way was truly exhilarating! The one hundred million in her card was the severance pay Gu Beixian had given her not long ago, and the fifty-six million was what he had given her sporadically over the past three years. Every time he lost his temper, he would compensate her with money, and he was quite generous. Su Huan used to resent him for trying to buy her off with money, but today, she found this method of casually throwing money around incredibly cool! Giving Chu Suosuo flowers and bags, what was that worth? Every time he gave her his card and checks, the minimum amount was also one million. After swiping the card, Su Huan elegantly signed her name with the pen handed to her by the salesgirl. The salesgirl returned the card to her. Su Huan held the bank card and waved it in front of Chu Suosuo's eyes, saying with a hint of mockery, "Miss Chu, your account probably doesn't even have fifty million, does it? Don't use your ignorance to flaunt yourself in front of me anymore, it's really low. As for using a twenty million check to ask me to leave Gu Beixian, don't do that again, it makes you look like a clown." Chu Suosuo's face was almost twisted with anger, and she said sourly, "What's there to be arrogant about? If it weren't for my mother forcing me to go abroad three years ago, where would you, the substitute, be?" "Substitute, ha, substitute," Su Huan's face paled, her fingers digging into her palm. This was a thorn in her heart, painful and heart-wrenching upon being prodded. Suddenly, a cold voice came from behind, "Miss Chu might not know, but you are the real substitute."
